Plot
In 1986 Madras, Baththavachalam "Baththa" is a ruthless and dreaded local gangster. He commands total authority on the streets by instilling deep fear in everyone around him. While he is a family man who loves his wife Kanimaa and their tween daughter Thenmozhi " Thenu", his violent lifestyle, uncontrollable rage, and harsh personality keep him emotionally distant from his family and cause periodic domestic outbursts. Once a timid eight-year-old schoolboy named Sabari witnesses Baththa brutally beating a local man in public. Terrified, Sabari develops a deep psychological dread of the gangster, viewing him as a merciless monster.
Soon after, during a school vacation, Sabari sneaks into his locked school's staff quarters to retrieve a toy that was previously confiscated by his teacher. After using the nearby school restroom, Sabari casually bolts the outer door from the outside, entirely unaware that Baththa—who had slipped into the deserted school building to hide or take a break—is inside the restroom. When Sabari realizes he has accidentally trapped the feared don, he is paralyzed with fright. Fearing that Baththa will hunt him down and beat him if he opens the door, a terrified Sabari runs away and keeps the incident a secret.
As days pass, the entire neighborhood goes into a frenzy searching for the missing gangster. Inside the restroom, stripped of his weapons, henchmen, and street authority, Baththa is forced to endure severe hunger, isolation, and physical vulnerability within the cramped space. The prolonged confinement triggers an intense period of self-reflection. Cut off from the violence of the outside world, Baththa begins confronting his deep-seated insecurities, his troubled past, and his underlying longing for his family.
Sabari, consumed by guilt and worry for the trapped man, secretly returns to the school restroom area. Through the locked door, the innocent boy and the hardened gangster begin having unexpected conversations. Sabari acts as an unlikely companion, sneaking small comforts to Baththa, while Baththa's terrifying facade slowly melts away in front of the child's raw innocence. Through this unusual bond, Baththa undergoes a profound psychological ego death, rediscovering his inner humanity and the value of simple kindness. Upon his eventual release, a transformed Baththa chooses a path of redemption, letting go of his violent street identity to genuinely reconnect with Kanimaa and his daughter.

Reception Critical response Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu wrote, "The first half of the film sails smoothly, thanks to the period setting and Vijay Sethupathi returning to a zone he long mastered through films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum [...] Even when the momentum dips in the second half, something in Balaji's screenplay commands your attention or makes you chuckle". Manivasagan Namasivayam of DT Next wrote, "Baththa works because it doesn't make the transformation of its eponymous character overly complicated: it places a violent man in a simple survival situation and gives him time to confront his demons, managing to derive humour, emotion and warmth from this premise". M. Suganth of The Times of India wrote, "The tonal swings between drama and comedy can feel somewhat dissonant, but Baththa remains consistently fresh and moving throughout", comparing the title character's redemption favourably to that of Assault Sethu from Jigarthanda (2014).
Yashaswini Sri of The Indian Express wrote, "After a stretch of films where Sethupathi seemed to be coasting, choosing projects for commercial reasons rather than creative ones, Baththa feels like a return to the actor who made Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, Super Deluxe and Vikram Vedha. You laugh when he laughs, and you cry when he cries". Prashanth Vallavan of Cinema Express wrote, "Everything that makes Vijay Sethupathi unique as a performer is on glorious display in Baththa, like an art display with its own room and spotlight". Janani K of India Today called it a "moving comedy drama that's wholesome and beautiful. With minor shortcomings, the film brings laughter and emotion effortlessly".
Box office In its four-day opening weekend, Baththa grossed worldwide.
